- 4 round steaks (about 1 pound)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 cup diced onion (about 1/2 medium onion)
- 3 teaspoons minced garlic (about 3 cloves)
- 2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon soy sauce

- Sear the Steaks: Season the steaks with salt and pepper. Heat the butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the steaks and cook for 3-5 minutes per side, or until a nice crust forms. Remove the steaks from the pan and set aside.
- Sauté Onions and Garlic: Add the diced onions to the skillet and cook until softened, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Add the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more.
- Make the Gravy: Sprinkle the flour over the onion mixture and whisk to form a paste. Gradually pour in the beef broth while whisking constantly to prevent lumps. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce and soy sauce.
- Smother the Steaks: Return the seared steaks to the skillet with the gravy. Cook for an additional 3-4 minutes, or until the steaks are cooked through and well coated in the gravy.
- Serve: Season with additional salt and pepper to taste. Serve the smothered steaks with your favorite sides, such as mashed potatoes or rice.
Notes
- You can use any type of steak you prefer, but round steak is a good affordable option for this recipe.
- If you want a thicker gravy, simmer it for a longer time or add a slurry of 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon water.
- For extra flavor, you can add a splash of red wine or a tablespoon of tomato paste to the gravy.
