Ingredients
Scale
Dough Ingredients
- 220ml / 1 cup warm milk (whole or skimmed)
- 1½ tsp sugar
- 7g / 1 tbsp active dry yeast
- 3 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 large egg
- ½ tsp salt
- 400g / 3 cups bread flour (or all purpose flour)
Finishing Ingredients
- 1 egg for brushing
- 1 tbsp butter (melted)
- 1 clove garlic (pressed)
- 1 tbsp fresh parsley (chopped)
Instructions
- Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm milk, yeast, and sugar. Let it stand for 5 minutes or until the mixture becomes frothy, indicating the yeast is active.
- Prepare the Dough: Add vegetable oil, salt, and 1 egg to the yeast mixture and mix well with a fork. Pour this liquid mixture into the flour and stir until a rough dough forms.
- Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. If using a stand mixer, knead with a dough hook for 1 minute on low speed, then 4 minutes on medium speed.
- First Rise: Rub a bowl with vegetable oil, place the dough inside, cover with plastic wrap and a towel, and leave it in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until the dough triples in size. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) during this time.
- Shape the Rolls: Punch down the risen dough, transfer onto a floured surface, and divide it into 16 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and place them spaced about 1 inch apart in a well-buttered 9×13 inch baking pan.
- Second Rise: Cover the pan with a tea towel and let the rolls rise again for 30 minutes until puffed.
- Prepare for Baking: Brush the rolls with a beaten egg to give them a golden shine once baked.
- Bake the Rolls: Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until the rolls are golden brown on top.
- Make Garlic Butter: While the rolls bake, melt 1 tablespoon of butter with the pressed garlic and mix in the chopped parsley.
- Brush Rolls with Garlic Butter: As soon as the rolls are out of the oven, brush them generously with the garlic butter mixture for a delicious, aromatic finish.
Notes
- Serve these rolls warm with garlic butter immediately for the best flavor and softness.
- You can substitute bread flour with all-purpose flour but the texture might be slightly different.
- If you prefer a stronger garlic flavor, add an extra clove of garlic to the butter mixture.
- For a glossy finish, ensure the egg wash covers the rolls entirely before baking.
- These rolls freeze well; thaw and warm before serving.
