Ingredients
Units
Scale
For the Hamburger Steaks:
- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef (preferably ground chuck)
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon ground mustard
For the Gravy:
- 1 small onion, thinly sliced
- 1 (10.5-ounce) can French onion condensed soup (undiluted)
- 1 (.87-ounce) packet brown gravy mix
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
Instructions
- Prepare the Hamburger Patties
In a large bowl, crumble the ground beef and season it with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and ground mustard. Mix the ingredients gently with a fork to avoid overworking the meat, which could result in tough patties. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape into patties. - Cook the Hamburger Steaks
Heat a skillet (cast iron is ideal) over medium-high heat. Once the skillet is hot, place the hamburger patties in the pan. Cook them for about 4 minutes on one side until a crust forms. Flip the patties and cook for another 4 minutes. Remove the patties from the skillet and let them rest on a plate lined with paper towels. - Prepare the Gravy
Drain excess grease from the skillet, leaving about 2 tablespoons. Return the skillet to medium heat and add the sliced onions. Cook for approximately 3 minutes or until the onions are translucent. Stir in the undiluted French onion soup, gravy mix, and water, and mix well. Bring the gravy to a boil, then lower the heat to a simmer. - Combine and Cook
Stir in the Worcestershire sauce and return the hamburger patties to the skillet. Let them simmer in the gravy until they are cooked through to your desired doneness. Serve the steaks hot with the onion gravy spooned over the top.
Notes
- If you’d like to add even more flavor, consider incorporating chopped mushrooms into the gravy.
- These steaks pair wonderfully with mashed potatoes, steamed green beans, or buttered rice for a complete meal.
- For even cooking, ensure the patties are of uniform thickness when forming them.
- To avoid grease splatter, cover the pan slightly while cooking but be sure not to trap too much steam.
