Description

American Chop Suey, also known as Goulash, is a comforting one-pot meal combining ground beef, elbow macaroni, and a rich tomato-based sauce. This hearty dish is seasoned with Italian herbs and garlic, simmered to perfection, and topped with melted cheddar cheese and fresh parsley for a satisfying family dinner ready in just 45 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 lbs (900g) ground beef (90/10)
  • 1 medium yellow onion, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 cups (730ml) beef broth
  • 29oz (820g) can tomato sauce
  • 28oz (790g) can diced tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 2.5 cups (375g) uncooked elbow macaroni noodles
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • Parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Brown the Beef: In a dutch oven over medium-high heat, heat the olive oil and brown the ground beef until fully cooked with no pink remaining. Drain excess grease, transfer the beef to a bowl, and set aside.
  2. Sauté Onions and Garlic: Return the dutch oven to the heat and add the chopped onions. Cook and stir occasionally for about 3 minutes until they become translucent. Add minced garlic and cook for another 2 minutes, stirring frequently to avoid burning and to release its aroma.
  3. Add Liquids and Seasonings: Return the cooked ground beef to the dutch oven. Pour in the beef broth, tomato sauce, and diced tomatoes. Stir in Worcestershire sauce, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, paprika, salt, pepper, and add bay leaves. Mix everything well and bring to a boil.
  4. Simmer the Sauce: Reduce heat to low, cover the pot, and let the mixture simmer for 10 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
  5. Cook the Macaroni: Stir in the uncooked elbow macaroni noodles. Continue to simmer covered on low heat, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking, for an additional 10 minutes or until noodles are al dente and the sauce has thickened to your liking.
  6. Finish and Serve: Remove from heat and discard the bay leaves. Stir in shredded cheddar cheese until melted and evenly combined. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley and serve hot.

Notes

  • American Chop Suey is a classic one-pot dish loaded with beef, noodles, and cheese all in a rich tomato sauce, ready in about 45 minutes.
  • For a smoother texture, you can use crushed tomatoes instead of diced.
  • If you prefer a spicier dish, add red pepper flakes along with the other seasonings.
  • Substitute ground turkey or chicken for a leaner version.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days and reheated gently.
