Description

The Black Widow Cocktail is a refreshing and unique mezcal-based drink that combines the tartness of fresh blackberries and lime juice with the sweetness of Concord grape juice and simple syrup. Topped with effervescent ginger beer and garnished with aromatic bay leaf and additional blackberries, this cocktail offers a balanced flavor profile perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Cocktail

  • 4 fresh blackberries, plus more for serving
  • 3/4 oz. fresh lime juice
  • 2 oz. mezcal
  • 1 oz. Concord grape juice
  • 3/4 oz. simple syrup
  • Ice

For Topping

  • Ginger beer, for topping off

For Garnish

  • Bay leaf
  • Additional blackberries

Instructions

  1. Muddle Blackberries and Lime Juice: In a cocktail shaker, muddle the fresh blackberries and lime juice together until the berries are broken down and releasing their juices, about 10 to 20 seconds.
  2. Add Remaining Ingredients and Shake: Add the mezcal, Concord grape juice, and simple syrup to the shaker. Fill the shaker with ice, cover it, and shake vigorously until the outside of the shaker becomes very frosty, about 20 seconds, to chill and combine the flavors well.
  3. Double-Strain the Cocktail: Strain the drink through a fine-mesh strainer held directly above an ice-filled glass to ensure a smooth, seedless cocktail. This double strain removes any seeds and pulp left from the muddling process.
  4. Top with Ginger Beer and Garnish: Top off the strained cocktail with ginger beer to add a refreshing effervescence. Garnish with a bay leaf and additional blackberries for an elegant and aromatic finish.

Notes

  • Double straining is key to achieving a smooth texture free of blackberry seeds.
  • Use fresh lime juice for the best, brightest flavor.
  • Adjust the amount of simple syrup to your preferred sweetness level.
  • Mezcal adds a smoky nuance, but you can substitute with tequila for a milder flavor.
  • Serve immediately to enjoy the cocktail at its freshest and most effervescent.
