Description

These Best-Ever Cheese Straws feature crisp, golden puff pastry twisted with a sharp cheddar, green onion, and sesame seed mixture. Perfectly flaky and packed with savory flavor, they make an irresistible appetizer or snack that’s easy to prepare and impressively delicious.

Ingredients

Scale

Cheese Mixture

  • 2 oz. finely grated sharp cheddar
  • 1 tsp. all-purpose flour
  • 2 Tbsp. finely chopped green onions
  • 2 Tbsp. sesame seeds

Puff Pastry

  • 1 (17.3-oz.) package puff pastry dough, divided into 2 sheets
  • 1 large egg, whisked until frothy

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 425°F (220°C) to prepare for baking the cheese straws.
  2. Mix the Cheese Topping: In a small bowl, combine the finely grated sharp cheddar, all-purpose flour, chopped green onions, and sesame seeds, ensuring the ingredients are well mixed for even distribution.
  3. Prepare the Puff Pastry: Roll one sheet of puff pastry out on a piece of parchment paper to a thickness of about 1/8 inch, making sure it measures 10 inches wide. Brush the entire surface with the whisked egg, then evenly sprinkle the cheese mixture over the top.
  4. Slice the Pastry: Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the puff pastry widthwise into strips about 3/4 inch thick. Slide the parchment paper with the cut strips onto a sheet tray and chill in the refrigerator for at least 20 minutes to firm up.
  5. Form the Straws: Line another sheet tray with parchment paper. Transfer half of the pastry strips to this tray and twist each strip to create spiral shapes. Repeat with the remaining strips on a second tray. Place both trays back into the refrigerator for an additional 30 minutes to chill before baking.
  6. Bake to Perfection: Bake the cheese straws in the preheated oven for 10 to 12 minutes, or until deeply golden and puffed. Halfway through the baking time, rotate the trays and switch their positions in the oven for even cooking.

Notes

  • Be sure to chill the puff pastry strips before baking to help them hold their twisted shape.
  • You can substitute sharp cheddar with other flavorful cheeses like Parmesan or Gruyère for different flavor profiles.
  • For a nuttier flavor, try toasting the sesame seeds lightly before mixing.
  • Serve these cheese straws warm or at room temperature as a delightful party snack or appetizer.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container to keep them crisp.
