Scale
For the Bratwurst:
- 5 bratwurst
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided
- 12 ounces beer (any type)
For the Onions:
- 2 large white onions, thinly sliced
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon minced garlic (about 3 cloves)
For Serving:
- 5 bratwurst buns or hot dog buns
- 1/4 cup stone ground mustard (for topping)
Instructions
- Brown the Bratwurst:
Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large heavy skillet over medium-high heat. Gently add the bratwurst and cook them for 3–4 minutes on each side, until they are browned all over. Once browned, remove them from the skillet and set them aside on a plate. - Cook the Onions:
Add the remaining 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil to the skillet. Add the thinly sliced onions and season them with 1/2 teaspoon of salt and 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper. Stir frequently and cook for about 7–8 minutes, allowing the onions to soften and develop a golden caramelized color. - Add Garlic:
Stir in the minced garlic and let it cook for approximately 1 minute, allowing the aroma to release without burning it. - Simmer the Bratwurst in Beer:
Pour the beer into the skillet, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Return the bratwurst to the skillet, ensuring they are partially immersed in the beer. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat to medium-low. Simmer for 8–10 minutes, allowing the beer to reduce and the onion mixture to thicken. Ensure the bratwurst is cooked to an internal temperature of 165°F. - Assemble and Serve:
Toast the bratwurst buns if desired. Place one bratwurst in each bun, top generously with the beer-braised onions, and drizzle with stone ground mustard. Serve immediately and enjoy!
Notes
- Use your favorite type of beer; pilsners and lagers work best, but you can also use dark beer for a stronger flavor.
- For extra flavor, you can toast the buns in the same skillet after cooking the bratwurst.
- If you prefer a sweeter taste, consider adding 1–2 teaspoons of brown sugar when cooking the onions.
- Serve with a side of fries, potato salad, or a tangy coleslaw for a complete meal.
