Description
Deliciously sweet and comforting apple dumplings made by wrapping Granny Smith apple slices in crescent roll dough, baked with a buttery cinnamon sugar sauce and soda for a perfect golden glaze. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream for an irresistible dessert.
Ingredients
Scale
Apples and Dough
- 2 large Granny Smith apples, peeled and cored
- 2 cans crescent dough
Sauce
- 2 sticks unsalted butter
- 1 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- Pinch of salt
- 1 can Mountain Dew (or lemon-lime soda)
Instructions
- Preheat and prepare dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
- Prepare apple rolls: Cut each peeled and cored Granny Smith apple into eighths. Take each apple slice and roll it into a crescent roll dough starting from the wide end, sealing the dough around the apple. Place each wrapped apple slice seam side down in the prepared baking dish.
- Make the sauce: In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter. Stir in the packed brown sugar until dissolved and combined. Add vanilla extract, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt, stirring thoroughly. Remove the sauce from heat.
- Pour sauce and soda: Pour the warm cinnamon-butter sauce evenly over the apple rolls in the baking dish. Then carefully pour the can of Mountain Dew or lemon-lime soda around the edges of the dish, avoiding pouring directly on top of the apple rolls to keep them covered with sauce.
- Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30-40 minutes until the crescent dough is golden brown, crispy, and the sauce is bubbly and caramelized.
- Serve: Remove from oven and serve the apple dumplings warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream and spoonfuls of the delicious sauce from the dish.
Notes
- Use Granny Smith apples for a tart contrast that balances the sweetness of the sauce and dough.
- If lemon-lime soda is not available, any clear citrus soda can be substituted.
- For an extra touch, sprinkle a bit of extra cinnamon sugar on top before baking.
- Ensure the soda is poured around the edges to avoid washing away the sauce on top of the dumplings.
- This dessert is best served warm but can be reheated gently in the oven or microwave.
